holland and cook are two fantastic books that contain many examples of stressed and unstressed syllables. in many chinese courses, these examples are listed only in the book, so if you’re on a phone or handout you can get a few of them. no matter which method you choose for learning chinese, it’s a good idea to have such a book with you, just in case a teacher or classmate is using a different method. fortunately, i have both books in my collection and have used both of them in my classes.
i find that you have to know at least one character and one character compound for each page to have success with the handout. it’s important to understand the character first. once you have that, it’s easy to construct the character compound. for example, let’s say you want to learn the character 鼻. this character is composed of two parts: 鼻 and 安 (called 鼎). knowing each of these parts will help you put the character together. you learn each part by simply taking a character book and looking up the answer in this dictionary.
for vocabulary, whenever possible, you need to be able to read a character or a word in the text. if you look at the pictures in the book, you can read them in the characters below. if you can read a word in the chinese character, then you can associate the word with the picture in your mind. if this is the case, then you’ll naturally think of an alternative way of saying the word when necessary.
it is important that you understand character tones as a student of chinese. this is a really difficult concept to grasp for people who speak english, because english has no tones. the very basics of english syllables, however, have tones. i have students that know tones, but still struggle with chinese characters.
if you have followed the above plan, you will have a solid command of the basics of reading chinese, and you are able to speak to most chinese in a very professional way. you will be asked to comment on news, and probably you will have a history of the republic in your knowledge. you may even be able to reply properly to conversation starters like what do you think of _______? or what do you think of ___?. reading, listening and speaking are all skills that will help you build confidence and face the real world.
a typical stage 7 course will contain an introduction to practice and culture, introduction to the people’s republic of china, compulsory practice and the history of the party, an introduction to film, tv and recording in china, practice in the examination system, practice in diplomacy, practice in government and management, an introduction to the language and china today, and language learning for the purpose of business, work, study or tourism. in addition to that, there are lots of opportunities to meet with chinese people to improve your skills at doing business and interacting with the local chinese.
