Photoshop has a very well-developed user interface and many complex features. But it is also a complex program that requires many hours to fully learn all of its capabilities. Photoshop Elements, on the other hand, doesn’t contain all the features of the professional version but provides a simpler, faster, and more direct workflow.

What makes a good story?

I’ve been reading some of the Arthur C. Clarke sci-fi novels and it really bugs me, I am not a huge fan of the the style of writing and the novels are pretty ponderous. I want to read good science fiction, but no matter how many i read, the novels just… seem like a lot of futurological speculation thrown together with a lot of filler.
What I’m really looking for is a good science fiction novel, one that is focused on the story, the setting and the characters, (and not too much space opera and not too much story telling, just enough story telling)
I do not care about which story, which setting, etc because I know that would give it the wrong kind of answer, but if you have read any, please tell me what they did well and what didn’t.

I agree with @Radu Romic’s comments that the question itself is a little vague, and that it should probably be narrowed down a bit. There are many good answers to that question in the context of sci-fi, depending on whether it is an individual novel or series, but I’ll try to answer it generally.
The key is a good story.
To be more specific, a good story has the following traits:

A beginning
A middle, which is interesting enough to keep the reader’s interest, and not just move him or her to the end
An ending, which is not too predictable or too difficult to figure out, but also not something that was obvious all along

The first quality of a good story is actually quite difficult, because it is just so hard to tell a compelling story, particularly about the future. A good story never takes itself too seriously, so that readers are not too confused or uncertain that something important is going on.
Science fiction is particularly tricky to tell a good story with, because it often doesn’t take place in a real setting, it might be really hard to imagine the near-future, and it’s hard to know what a plot-driven story looks like, but a good science fiction story must be what I just outlined above: a good story, and not a lecture.
In addition, good science fiction is very character-driven, and the characters should be fully fleshed-out. With that said, they should not be character-driven to the exclusion of everything else.
