SolarMax is a space simulator with a very intuitive interface. It works as a 2D space simulator with a real time simulation engine, while having some useful extras as well as little features such as the ability to trace an object. The Sun object is a convenient way to start, and allows you to setup the correct rotation, positioning and movement of the objects in orbit around it. While solar maxima and minima can be set through the setting, the Sun position is based on the last actual position of the Sun.
Space objects can be selected, and then the orbits of these objects can be setup. The orbits can be programmed to follow a pre-defined path, but can also be updated with the actual positions of the objects. A good trick for determining if an object is within the same orbit as another object is to hover the mouse above it and observe if they move in the same direction. This also works for objects being within the same orbit, but does not work for objects moving in different orbits.
Note that setting the Sun to the correct position (based on actual position) is essential for the simulation to work correctly, and is not simply a cosmetic feature.
The simulation displays a beautiful view of the Solar System, displaying the planets in perspective and being easy to navigate.
SolarMax includes a few extras, as well as being able to track a single object of interest. The extras are simply kept in a settings section, but include the ability to interact with planets (within the same orbit as the Sun), and display the size of the planets (when visible), as well as which planets can be reached and how far away they are. A settings option is included for locking the solar system at certain positions in the Solar System, which allows you to perform calculations, such as planet orbits.
The game runs on real time, so if you’re running it on a low end machine, you can expect some issues, especially when running it for a longer period of time. It does run smoothly, but is quite laggy at times.
