Yes, Suicide Squad is a comic-book movie like Wonder Woman, but this isn’t a jokey pop-culture pastiche. It’s much, much darker. It’s about a super-powered team of imprisoned supervillains led by Will Smith’s Deadshot. What they do, and how they do it, is far, far worse than anything they did in the comics.
Suicide Squad (2016) stars Will Smith and Margot Robbie as well as Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. The film is set to be released in theaters on August 5, 2016 in the USA. It is set for August 6, 2016 in the UK.
The movie was somewhat successful at the box office. Although it didn’t do the best box office numbers it made $387.3 million worldwide. Unfortunately for DC Comics fans, you’ll have to wait for the release of Suicide Squad 2 on August 5th, 2017.
Suicide Squad (2016) was a critical and commercial disappointment. Critics scored it 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is slightly better than Suicide Squad! Fans were much more tepid with a 53% rating. Even more telling, the movie was down 36% from the previous year’s Suicide Squad!
The sexual assault storyline is far from sensational, but it makes for surprisingly frank and challenging discussion of the human experience. In a summer filled with movies that romanticized villains, Suicide Squad takes a different approach by showing a world where villains are as much the victims as the heroes they attack.
