the book can be an excellent text for courses in transport calculations, applied stochastic routing, and network optimization and design. the text deals with a broad range of topics. they are presented in a good balance between the more elementary material and slightly more advanced concepts. for example, the book teaches the basic ideas of the pigeonhole principle, while does not delve into more advanced proofs. it also covers the basics of sequences, sets, and functions. much more importantly, the book brings a good amount of real-life application. examples are included to illustrate the content of each theory. graph theory provides a good summary of the major concepts of a network with the detailed theory laid out in other chapters.

the author has done an excellent job of including formulas, key theorems, and proofs of the mathematical concepts in the text. the mathematical notation is not overwhelming; it is very concise and clear.

some may be concerned about the suggestions and homework assignments given in the book. while these assignments are designed to encourage the reader to develop his own and his class’s understanding of the material, it may be misleading for some to take the suggestions and assignments as given.

the graphs are an integral part of the text, as is the use of conway notation. although this notation is very effective, the authors do not use it regularly. sometimes the books lack an explanation of the basic mathematical symbols, and there are various locations in the text where symbols can be confused. i would have liked some explanation of the graph theory concepts in the basic section on graph theory. the connections between the topics are explained in an easy to understand way in the conclusion section.
