Remove all color from image except background

I am trying to convert all pixels to greyscale except background. I have tried a few methods on SO like this one but it was not working well.

I do not understand how to not change pixels on background and save image with same dimensions. My image pixels are always square.
How can I do this?

Check out the cvtColor function, which takes the input image, and the type of the output image that you want. It is based on “normalized”.
