Ingenious, like the iconic brown paper bag, the film incorporates a “must-have” feature that no customer could live without: headphones. The problem is, most movie houses — especially the ones showing 22 Jump Street — don’t have headphones, so the moviegoers can’t settle in and enjoy the flick. That’s the future of movies, a future in which we sit in a room by ourselves, put on headphones and no longer bother to talk to anyone else. How sad. I know it’s not what theaters are built for, but who knows, maybe theaters will end up adapting to survive. Until then, at least we can kill the talkies.
However, the film also takes digs at the nature of sitcom-based television, with Jenko and Schmidt referring to it as “the only show that’s on that you can’t stop watching.” It’s also not clear whether actual characters from the 21 Jump Street TV show are present in the film, so it’s possible to watch it without any awareness of TV-based spoofing. But if you’re sensitive to the theme of changing what you’re watching for the sake of change, the film probably won’t hit your funny bone. You’ll see what I mean when you get the chance to watch it for yourself.
The film is overflowing with fun physical gags, but it also has a good number of inspired intercut sequences. I can’t think of too many comedies that go for it quite as brazenly as 22 Jump Street. It makes use of a lot of visual humor, and it shows. I think some of the sequences where those themes are executed brilliantly, like the one where the guys go on a date with two women who are supposed to be in the same sorority, are the best, and some of the jokes are just hysterical.

22 jump street’s running time of 77 minutes is roughly equivalent to what it took lord and miller’s first film, a scanner darkly, to run. it contains more of the same sort of conceptual humor. yet while characters are introduced and quickly dispatched, there’s a feeling that everyone involved is smiling tensely, hoping that what they’re coming up with isn’t going to look and feel like what’s come before. the second film, superbad, is still on the other side of the 2000s wave that lord and miller have been surfing, but at least there’s a chance it’ll be a tsunami of laughs rather than shrieking cartoon noise.
