The first version of AutoCAD did not include a 3D function. The AutoCAD graphics engine was much slower than that of competing programs such as Pro/ENGINEER from PTC, DX/Designit from Autodesk, and AutoCAD LT/AutoLISP from Unigraphics. Early versions of AutoCAD included only a 2D drafting application, and 3D drafting capability was added in 1987 with version 2. In 1988, version 3 included 2D and 3D modeling and was released as an add-on module for UNIX. In 1989, version 4 featured a graphical user interface (GUI) with 3D modeling capability; the new layout and modeling technology made AutoCAD the most powerful 2D and 3D CAD package at the time. AutoCAD and AutoLISP were re-branded as Autodesk Revit in 2012.
An add-on software module called AutoCAD XPress, which is a version of AutoCAD without a three-dimensional modeling capability, was introduced to improve AutoCAD’s speed and functionality. In 1992, AutoCAD SP1 replaced XPress as the default AutoCAD program; a separate version of XPress was released as the XPress 2000. Another version of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, was released in 1996. AutoCAD LT lacks 3D modeling features, but many of its drawing functions and commands are identical to those of AutoCAD.
AutoCAD (originally AutoCAD for Windows and later AutoCAD 2003) is an integrated software suite that provides 2D and 3D drafting, design, construction, and documentation, as well as post-processing functions such as CAD (computer-aided design), CAM (computer-aided manufacturing), and CAE (computer-aided engineering). AutoCAD is bundled with other Autodesk products, such as AutoCAD Mechanical, AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD Plant 3D, AutoCAD Structural, and AutoCAD Map 3D.
