The layout and design of buildings, and the detailing of architectural work, are carried out using Autodesk AutoCAD. Architectural drawing tools include pipe flow analysis, dimensioning, quantity takeoff and dimensioning. At its mid-point, each corner also has a co-ordinate, usually given in metres or inches. The corner (and hence the area) can be divided into a number of smaller areas, known as polygons. A 3D drawing is a drawing of a 3D object, such as a building.

By combining two-dimensional drawing tools with 3D modeling tools, AutoCAD is able to generate 3D models, 3D views and 3D models. These are then represented in drawings as 3D views and 3D solids.

AutoCAD was originally developed at the beginning of the 1980s by Ginkgo Software of Vancouver, British Columbia, and later brought to market in 1983 by Autodesk. The name is derived from “Automatic Computerized Architecture Design”.

The development team at Ginkgo Software consisted of three architects and two draftsmen, who developed AutoCAD around the task of the day for small companies which required CAD for basic architectural drafting and for architecture departments in universities. A 1987 Autodesk Research report[1] described AutoCAD’s software architecture as a “nimble application suite built on an industry-standard, high-volume system architecture that is easy to expand”. It was an “extremely powerful” CAD suite in that it allowed “the drafting of virtually any architectural design, from the most elaborate to the most routine”. The report also stated that,
