You can use the following steps to combine images into a single file:
**1.** Select the layers to be combined and then drag them to the new layer in the Layers panel.
**2.** Open the Layer menu and choose Flatten Layers, which flattens the selected layers in the Layers panel.
**3.** Choose File | Save and then select Layer from the Save as Type drop-down menu, as shown in Figure 1-19.

**4.** Leave the name of the file set to the same as the name of the layer. If you want to change the file’s name, do so.

Traditionally, most telecommunications systems operate on a circuit switched basis (i.e., for the duration of a call) providing a dedicated end to end connection between the caller and receiver. However, the wireless telecommunications industry is currently investigating packet switched technology for wireless connections, including those used for point to point wireless connections as well as wireless point to multipoint (e.g., multi-cell) connections. Because wireless network connections are typically “re-established” over the air in packet switched format at the outset of each communication session, applications typically include the capability to monitor the quality of the wireless communications link and control the operation of the wireless device to maintain an acceptable quality of service. For example, wireless devices (e.g., cellular telephones) periodically monitor the signal strength of received uplink transmissions to determine whether the transmit/receive (Tx/Rx) link is within a desired signal strength threshold.
Traditionally, however, the signal strength of the uplink transmissions are generally measured at the base station subsystem or other point of access to the packet switched wireless network. For example, as shown in FIG. 1, a typical wireless subscriber station 100 performs uplink link monitoring by determining the signal strength of received packets transmitted from a subscriber station over the uplink portion of the wireless network 102. The subscriber station 100 monitors received signal strength indications (“RSSI”) for received packets transmitted by the subscriber station 100 in the uplink. The subscriber station 100 generally provides the RSSI data to a base station subsystem 104, and the base station 104 typically analyzes the RSSI data to determine whether the uplink Tx/Rx link is at an acceptable signal level. For example, if the RSSI is greater than a threshold value, then the base station 104 can request the subscriber station 100 to increase the transmission power on the next packet of the session to achieve a desired RSSI level.
Some wireless telecommunications standards, however, permit subscribers to configure the wireless device to self-initiate a handover in response to RSSI data received from the base station subsystem 104. For example, some CDMA standards, such as IS-2000, permit wireless devices to transmit a Handover Indication message to the base station subsystem 104 in response to RSSI information received from the base station subsystem 104. More specifically, for example, if a subscriber device 100 determines that an RSSI has dropped below the desired signal level during a particular session, the device 100 can transmit a handover

Many industries and applications could be aided by accurate detection of vessel size. For example, downhole in oilfield operations, it may be desirable to determine the size of a borehole being drilled in order to determine when the drill string should be changed or if the size of the borehole has reached a diameter to be productive. Additionally, it may be desirable to determine the size of a vessel (such as an oil well) to determine its capabilities. There are many conventional methods for measuring an actual vessel size in the field including, for example, using gauges or hydrostatic heads, but these are impractical for applications where the vessel may be too small to access, such as applications where downhole or vessel sizes are too small to grasp or grab for measuring. While these methods are still used for inspecting larger vessels, the rise in popularity of sub-sea well borehole drilling has created new methods and challenges to measure vessel size. One such method uses so-called “soundings” while attempting to penetrate a borehole wall with a long pole or rod that is suspended from the vehicle or drilling rig at a controlled depth, and the contact of the pole with the wall is determined by the change in the water pressure, which can be detected by mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, or sonic (ultrasound) probes. Another method relies on sound pulses sent down one of the drilling string or wire line cables using an electric pulse generator (or transmitter), and the location of the reflected signal is determined to yield the size of the vessel.
In the past, ultrasound has been used as the most common way to determine vessel size in the absence of direct physical contact, but the reliability of the acoustic methods is dependent on the reflectivity of the interface between the probe and the vessel. In applications where the vessel is inaccessible or near the bottom of the well borehole, the vessel may be partially or fully filled with mud, which may be a highly reflective material making direct contact measurements inaccurate and unreliable. Without accurate information on the size of the vessel, physical assessments of the condition of the vessel or of the subsurface formations cannot be made.
