In September, my friends and I finally came up with a full-blown idea for a post-apocalyptic top-down 3D game – and made a super low-budget trailer for it. For those, whom haven’t heard of it yet, here’s a short recap of the plot:

“In the wake of the apocalypse, a young fighter named Brendan comes to find his sister in a remote land where wilds live, overcoming obstacles to survive.”

Where does a game like this even come from?

Needless to say, it all began with a desire to make a game myself. As with most game ideas, I went into full frame-by-frame concept video mode for this one. The result is an experience from your perspective: you’re a young fighter facing a horde of monsters in a starry night sky with the emerald city of Cydonia (Aurignacian Underground City) behind you – perhaps the kingdom’s capital destroyed last by the northern Ural troll. The game is called OSR: Open Sky Rangers and it’s an action-oriented shooter genre game for Windows, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It will be full of hand-drawn graphics, pixel-art cut-scenes, and playable music by My Uncle.

As far as my story goes, I was fascinated to start with people’s fascination with the post-apocalytic theme: it’s so simple yet still has such a strong cult-like appeal. Over the past two years, I’ve already read five books about it and watched several popular movies, TV series, and video games.

Such titles as The Walking Dead, Mad Max, Fallout, Battlestar Galactica, Dystopia: Players Manual, Fallout 2: Lambs of Chaos, Greg Stolze‘s album The Fall of the American Empire, a Youtuber-revisionist of Battlestar Galactica, and a couple many other highly-rated films and TV shows have been around since the 2002 elections of George W. Bush. Reading all those stories that came from the past has made me feel nostalgic and listen to a few classic U.S. rock songs (that died out in the last 30 years like “The Final Countdown”, whose theme has a great post-apocalyptic appeal
