History

Early history

AutoCAD was created by Howie Hallman, Mike Everson and Jim Frank while the three were working together at the United Systems Corporation in San Jose, California. From the beginning, it was intended to work only on an Apple II, and only later to be ported to other microcomputers. In fact, AutoCAD was so close to completion for the Apple II when the first product manager saw it, that he ordered a few minutes of the time required to finish it in order to prevent the project being abandoned. To make the final product, the trio worked long hours for very little pay. For example, when the first payroll was due, they were working 10-hour days for only $45 per week, which was the minimum amount that could be withheld for taxes.

Howie Hallman left UCS to work on AutoCAD full-time, and eventually took over the company as CEO of Autodesk. The computer on which AutoCAD was initially written was Hallman’s own Apple II, a 9-pin card from UCS, and a 17.7k Apple II disk drive. When he moved the system to a commercial microcomputer, he bought a 3.5-inch disk drive for $2,500. Jim Frank and Mike Everson were paid less than $300 per week for their work on the original program.

AutoCAD’s first major release was AutoCAD 2.0 in 1984. With this release, AutoCAD was released as a fully self-contained application, including the drawing editor, palettes, and working drawing environment. Its ability to support multiple users in a single drawing file was a major innovation.

Connect to your Network
Right click on your Autodesk account on your desktop, then click on “Account Management”

Create your first project
