The concept of drafting or CAD was largely the brainchild of a prolific, young, British engineer named Arthur Bowmer. Bowmer founded a software company named AutoLisp in 1970. Initially, AutoLisp was an application developed by AutoLisp Inc. to design factory automation (FA) equipment.
Bowmer gave the name “CAD” to this process. Bowmer’s idea was to make an integrated development environment. In a sense, Bowmer was using what would later be called “prototype” (trial) engineering. In Bowmer’s program, all the data necessary to produce a finished product, i.e., any necessary drawings or sketches, could be edited and reworked right up to the end of the production run.
