Once you learn the basics of AutoCAD, you can easily create beautiful drawings and models that you can share with your clients. AutoCAD is affordable to companies and individuals, especially in the “free” version, and it is not as expensive as more advanced CAD programs.

How do I get started with AutoCAD?

AutoCAD is the first thing I recommend to students who want to design, in any discipline, and in almost any form. I use it myself, and have used it for years. It is my software of choice, and I teach AutoCAD every year, regardless of what discipline I teach.

I suggest that students first download the free trial version, which gives you about a week of use. After you complete the free trial, if you decide you want to buy a license, the 30-day full version trial will allow you to use the software for 30 days without purchasing the license.

For the beginner, there are many helpful tutorials out there on the internet. Below is a list of links for various topics. If you find a good tutorial, share it with me or other students.

To get started with AutoCAD, there are two ways to get the software.

You can buy a license for AutoCAD and save some money.

You can download a “free” version of AutoCAD, called AutoCAD LT.

Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft’s native programming language C++ are supported, allowing the creation of AutoCAD Free Download add-ons. C++ is also the base of some other products, such as Inventor.

The Virtual-Workspace (VSAD) technology, developed by CA Technologies, provides an interface to AutoCAD objects on a separate computer without accessing the CAD file itself. This is an alternative for the DYNAFORM’s Virtual-Object technology, which allows running AutoCAD through a thin client software.

Community
The Autodesk User Group is the community forum for users to discuss AutoCAD. It is one of the longest-running CAD groups in the world. CA Tech created another CAD group for users to communicate regarding Autodesk products: The CA Tech User Community. This community also provides a place for users to find software, training, and information.
