How AutoCAD Works

In AutoCAD, everything is represented as either a shape or an object, and those shapes can be placed in three dimensions (3D). In AutoCAD, dimensions are represented as measured lengths and angles, typically called linear dimensions or just dimensions. Dimensions are used to define how objects are arranged in space, including the distance between each other. AutoCAD allows users to create and edit dimensions in three different ways:

Geometry

A shape is represented as one or more lines or polygons in the 3D drawing environment.

Label

A text string represents the dimension information and stores all the shape information in a separate table within the drawing.

Dimensional

A complete set of dimensions provides a reference for an object in a specific space. They consist of a number, unit, name, reference point, and associated text information.

Objects, which are the primary subject of a drawing, are grouped into layers, with each layer defining the visual properties of the objects within that layer. Once an object is selected, any associated shapes or dimensions can be edited directly, as opposed to being fixed to the object.

AutoCAD also includes tools for creating and editing other types of objects that can be placed in a drawing. These include curves, circles, and points.

Creating a Project

The first thing you must do when opening a new project is to decide whether you want to create a new drawing or open an existing drawing file. If you’re creating a new project, you’ll be asked to provide your first name, last name, business name, or organization, and password. This information is required when you want to save the project after it’s created. If you’re opening an existing project, you’ll see a list of the drawings in your current project.

After you’ve decided whether to create a new project or open an existing project, you can click the button to the right to accept the default project options. These options are available when you create a new project.

A new liquor store has been proposed for what used to be Fowlerville and Waverly’s only hardware store.

“We are looking for help from neighbors and customers,” said store owner Marv Friedline.

The owner of the former Fowlerville-Waverly Hardware wants to convert the former store into a liquor store.
