In 1954, engineer John Warnock at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) developed his own family of computer-aided drafting (CAD) and design software. In 1962, he formed the company “Computer Aided Drafting.” In 1969, the company changed its name to “Warnock Software Systems.” In 1973, the company was acquired by Picador, Inc., a company that had been founded in 1971 by Charles Blondin. After Warnock Software Systems changed its name to “Warnock International”, Picador licensed the Warnock product to the data processing division of Hewlett-Packard in 1974.
In 1977, Picador’s and Warnock’s parent company was renamed “International Business Machines (IBM)”. In 1978, IBM licensed the Warnock product to a smaller competitor, Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) of the United Kingdom. CSR then licensed the Warnock product to Electromat, Inc., of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In 1982, Electromat, Inc., then called “Digital Equipment Corporation” (DEC), introduced its own desktop CAD software, called “Electromat 1”. In 1984, Electromat purchased the rights to the Warnock product. In 1985, the U.S. Department of Defense selected DEC’s Electromat as the winner of a CAD contract for the Navy’s destroyer fleet. In 1986, DEC acquired Electromat. In 1988, IBM and DEC announced that they had been working together on their new product, a desktop CAD software application named “AutoCAD”. In 1990, after more than a decade of development, DEC and IBM demonstrated their new application, AutoCAD, at the “International Auto-CAD Conference.”

A growing number of studies demonstrate that the contact of two cells can induce heterotypic signals in non-communicating cells (neighboring cells), and that these cell-cell communication signals are important for the development of cells, tissue morphogenesis, and tumorigenesis. These studies have led to a number of in vitro heterotypic cell-cell communication assay systems. Here we provide a review of the experimental methods used to detect heterotypic communication signals. The systems include use of cell culture, or co-culture and transwell insert plate systems, and the use of cell-cell communication molecules. The methods range from simple fluorescence images to sophisticated image-based quantitative assays for heterotypic cell-cell communication. Although the majority of heterotypic cell-cell communication studies use two-dimensional monolayers as model systems, the methods are applicable to three-dimensional multicellular systems.
