History

From 1986 to 1995, the original AutoCAD was shipped with a plug-in for VisiCalc, and later for Microsoft Excel.
In the late 1980s, a variety of microcomputers became available that incorporated various levels of graphics capabilities. Many of these computers contained color graphics accelerators (AGA, CGA, or Hercules), and they allowed native CAD applications to be installed on these machines.
At this point, the original Autodesk had the market-dominant market share on systems running DOS. The Autodesk management decided that Autodesk needed to enter the operating system market, rather than trying to compete with the many Unix-based applications already available.
