Amid the flurry of activity in the General Assembly this month, one bill has stood out: HB 2187, the ‘Protect Life Act,’ authored by House Speaker David A. Toscano (D-Capitol). House Bill 2187 would nullify any state law, rule, regulation, or policy that would prohibit an abortion provider from prescribing medication that may induce abortion. It also would require that a physician who is not a medical doctor, nurse practitioner or physician’s assistant provide the medication, with a doctor’s prescription, to the patient. A patient would not be able to request the medication and a physician would not be able to refuse to provide it. It would be the physician’s decision whether to administer the medication to induce abortion.
The bill would go into effect in October if signed by the governor.
