In fact, Lightroom is now the complete Photoshop alternative, with a fully-integrated and well-thought out Bridge. Lightroom stores images as standard 16:9 or Square photos, and every image makes it into Adobe DNG (Designated Numeric File) format with lossless compression, so that data can be shared almost seamlessly. It also makes creating RAW images with a single, yet complex, camera setup a breeze. Lightroom has a robust library, and the user interface has been vastly improved from version before. This is no longer a one-way, top-down system. Adobe has really gone about making the “engine” a major consideration. It now takes the role of a Creative Cloud application, which is a much better model. You can view and organize your images in Adobe Exchange, easily make selections for your individual projects — import, edit and save images — all with ease and consistency. The integration with a Web server is one of the best I have found. Both of these, along with the feature sets, make it a great editor that has advanced quite a bit.

What’s right with Adobe Photoshop is that you can crop images to any angle and size you like, and the Image Adjustment Functions are now much better than before. That alone is worth the price of upgrading. There are less than 1% of users out there, but they can tweak, so something is better than nothing. On top of that, Photoshop now uses Merging Layers and includes a Services panel as basic image editing tools in the panel. You can even create your own custom services and blueprints. I really like this, and I find it a very useful way to edit photos in a much more intuitive and powerful way than current Adobe’s editors. Outside of the world of images, Adobe has improved Retouching and Atlas. Retouching is a bit tricky in that it can produce a clone effect if used too often. Of course, some images call for a logo redraw or a different background. I was a fan of Adobe has had a new alternative to Photoshop Actions, and not only can it be used with Photoshop, but also Movie Clip Maker and Premiere Elements. With Actions, the outcome is a solid, simple and flexible edition tool. There are many ways to use Actions, and if you need something created in a more complex format, it is probably going to cost you on top of what you are paying for Photoshop, but not always. Many of my clients are greatly benefitted by Actions, even if they are used with still images. There are image macros that you can quickly prepare for use with videos and screencasts, and even three brand new presets that can be used as image corrections to be applied in 3D space.

The new Content-Aware Fill (CAF) is a powerful image repair tool. With it, you can remove unwanted items from an image – such as dust or video — without having to greatly adjust the size or other aspects of the photo.

The Content-Aware Crop feature creates a new, cropped image from an image that’s set as the Foreground. The new image matches the dimensions (width, height, and resolution) of the target image and keeps the area from the Foreground that makes the original image appear to be crop-able. By default, the crop tool adds bordering and further adjusts the photo’s brightness and color better to make the new image appear more like the original.

Now you can create a horizontal or vertical guide, scale it, and place it over the image. This method lacks precision. But if you have another layer beneath the main image and place a guide line, it will show up on it. It will also show up over black areas and partial areas of the image, so I would imagine that it should be possible to edit this line and remove sections. A new function in Photoshop CC may allow us to adjust the line pretty much as we like it. But what about the black areas with the guide line? Of course, the black areas are omitted from the original image, and we do not have the opportunity to tease out the effect, so that this is not much use. Anyway, I believe that Adobe should also attack this problem. This issue is more than nit-picking, and I fully admit that I might not have explained it correctly since I am not an expert reviewer, but basically I am faced with dealing with two layers and one (or more) guides, where I need Photoshop to paint over the guides, adjust the black areas for me and leave me a good-looking guide line. And if I want to exclude certain areas of the image, then I may have to annotate that part, which may no longer be possible due to the long-lasting “forest removal” problem referred to below.
