I’ve been using it on and off for several years and it’s always impressed me. So why is Lightroom not my number one favorite image management program, exactly? The biggest problem is the library tool, which is clumsy and a chore to use. Since the library tool is so important, Lightroom has the utmost responsibility to create a more user-friendly tool. Now, there are third-party tools for importing media, importing photo libraries and so on, but they don’t compare to Lightroom itself. You can make things easier by importing your photos by camera or some other import mode, but you’ll have to do most work in Photoshop anyway. I read somewhere that Adobe eliminated the “brush” tool from Photoshop, but I really can’t believe it. As far as creating a cross-platform photo application, Photoshop remains my number one choice. It’s speed and stability make it the best published tool for photographic work. Lightroom has its advantages—and I can’t deny it—but not quite enough for me to concede that Lightroom is the best. That said, Lightroom is clearly a great product. I can’t wait to see more of what Adobe can come up with. Lightroom is an indispensable tool and, when the product grows organically, it will one day be that much more indispensable.
