This text covers the theory and practice of the Standard Template Library (STL) data structures. The course is designed to teach readers how to use these data structures in their applications. We approach a given topic by first looking at its theoretical background and then discuss practical coding techniques. For example, we show how to use the algorithm for finding the median of a set of numbers. The program also provides an introduction to the more important abstract data types defined in the C++ Standard Template Library. We then use these structures to implement certain basic data types, such as file systems, databases, and XML parsers. We examine both the theory and the practice of these data types. This algorithm converts an unsorted array of strings into an array of hashed values, called an hash table or hash-based dictionary. The hash table has two data structures: a table of entries and a table of buckets. We’ll start by designing a hash table that can be used to generate unique hash values for all of the strings in the input array. Then, we’ll implement a template function that inserts an element into an unordered_map with an initial capacity based on the size of the array in the constructor. Then, we’ll make a hash key that is the same as the value hashed by the hash table. We can use a comparator to sort the array. Finally, we’ll look at the range-for (or even iterative) algorithm to iterate through the elements of the array. We’ll look at a range-for algorithm that is a replacement for the traditional C loop in order to demonstrate the power of the C++ Standard Template Library (STL) containers.
