: Creating a Water Model

In this tutorial I am going to show you how to create a basic HD pool icon in Substance Designer and then export that. Along the way you will learn a few tricks that will come in very handy for any icon designer in the future, which will help to speed up your workflow and encourage you to create more iconic content as you create icons, and teach you how to spice your work up a notch.
The Materials
For this tutorial I have used 3D Coat, Photoshop and Substance Designer to create some simple scene blocks and common icon elements. You can use whatever the normal means of getting an HD resolution is on your machine. If you’re interested in throwing a combined environment together for it, have a look at the scenery assets I have created on patreon in this playlist.
What you want to do is take the scene block, apply materials to them and make sure they look ok on an ‘as is’ basis. If you’re happy to take it further from here, you could add some hair, apply a few more materials, move it into place and trim off excess if needed. There’s a ton of material packs online now and they can really add a lot more detail and detail to your icon.
Creating the Water
So we’re going to take it up a level now, and start adding more details. There will be a number of steps, so if you want to follow along, feel free to hit play on the videos above. If you click the “1-Step Demo” button I’ll have text pop up with the steps to access the full version, and a fast forward arrow will appear if you want to skip through to the key aspect of the demonstration.
Step 1: Just put some HD materials on a plain plane
This is the first step we’re going to do, but without getting too over excited about it just yet. So just with some basic plane render settings in 3D Coat, look at the materials you want to use to finish the icon in 3D coat. Adjust the environment & lighting to taste.
Step 2: Duplicate the icon
With your first icon removed, duplicate it by pressing ‘D’ on your keyboard. Now if you look inside ‘Duplicate’ you should see a new icon shape, and name. Change the name too if you want to keep it consistent, and remove the default version. If you’re happy with the first and second icon’s
