the film started to receive negative reviews on its release in 1968. the san francisco chronicle thought the film had been made “by a man with a glorious vision who has not sufficiently considered the human element.” the new york times complained that the story was all too complicated, and that the film was a mixture of science fiction and fantasy that was too confusing to be enjoyable. a british critic compared 2001 to the too-long, too-full play of hamlets second act.
kubrick was very protective of the films reputation, and he insisted that the film be shown only in a few theaters. he was determined that there would be no repeat of the abysmal box office of a clockwork orange, which had been universally condemned by the public and the critics when it was released in 1971.
as with 2001, kubrick injected many of the onscreen images with dramatic effect by using state-of-the-art gels and filters. but by using tinted filters to remove the colour of the sandy landscape, he created a starkly surreal effect. for example, the first descent of the newly discovered astronauts to the moon is shot with a dark blue filter that matches the black sand of the moon, giving the impression of a scene from a nightmarish dream. in fact, the image of the moon is based on a series of black-and-white photographs taken on earth by the viking before it was launched. in the same way, the cube-like shape of the alien monolith on the moon is based on a black-and-white image taken in india. in his film, the monolith seems to emanate energy, and the audience is treated to a series of 360-degree shots. indeed, the filmmakers found that by turning off the horizon in post-production they could extend the camera view in any direction by up to 18 degrees. for example, a shot of a vast city in the distance and 2001s spaceship, seen in the background, is actually a spherical city that the camera has just rotated in space. this was achieved by adding a lens and attaching a motor to its lens
many of the film was shot on location in london. kubrick always insisted on shooting exteriors in bright sunlight, as this was more true to life. the pressure of making an extremely expensive epic was enormous. the production budget was $26 million, double that of 2001, yet kubrick felt it was necessary to eliminate several small scenes that were not necessary to tell the story, such as the encounter of the space travelers in the crater.
