Dungeons & Dragons: In the name of the Elden Ring, and for the glory of the full moon! DM (or PLAYER of DM) of this campaign.
What you must know before jumping right in:
– This is a D&D adventure that is very different from the standard HoMM fare. It’s been designed by Icebreaker, and is called “Dungeons & Dragons: In the name of the Elden Ring and the glory of the full moon”. It’s a 3.5 game with a 5th Edition campaign style feel. The story is very atmospheric, and is told like a canon-but-switched-around-a-lot-of-time-zones novella with each session being a chapter. The voice actors add a lot of flavor as well, and are perfect for bringing the setting to life. The whole thing is not only a pleasure to watch, but also to experience.
– This is a PRE-GMEDESIGNED game. That is, every session begins with the DM and the table making a plan together, as they would do in a campaign. This is how they know what’s going to happen before it starts. There is no random dice rolls. Before each session starts, the DM tells the other characters what he thinks is going to happen, and then the party each rolls their dice to get to the same conclusion. They make their moves based on what they think will happen. This is what allows the game to be fun and a surprisingly immersive experience.
– The campaign goal is mainly to become an Elder Lord. There are several different goals you can set yourself, like traveling to the hometowns of the mysterious and lost race that our characters are a part of, and explore their magical artifacts and relics, join the Order of the Chivalry of the Elden Ring, or simply become renowned as a legend. When one of you completes a goal, it gets added to the board and becomes a quest. The game is designed in such a way that completing the quests is more important than anything else, and letting them go unfollowed is NOT an option. The DM checks in on the status of everyone’s goals every session, so everyone knows what’s going on.

Today is the release date for Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns. The DLC serves as a direct follow-up to 2015’s The Fall of the Shimmering Curtin and is set in a new region of Tyria called the Lands Between. Originally teased at PAX Prime, the expansion adds a slew of new features, including a story that must be completed before players are eligible for the game’s end-game events.
The tabletop role-playing game
On the tabletop version, it’s half a book of rules and half a book of maps and grid lines and it’s a real struggle to figure out what things are.
I imagine this game has been on my to-play list for a while now.
And now I can finally try it out myself.
For some time now, I’ve watched the Pathfinder module for Lie of the Land, which at its conclusion covers how to design and run a tabanticism game. In it, the scenario describes a play session. But I thought there are many elements missing in this play session that I think make it too long to simply play through in a single play session:
For one thing, the scenario is presented as a collection of narrative paragraphs followed by a list of questions. This implies an approach of writing scenarios for players to read and then recall and follow those rules in the moment. But as a GM, I know this is misleading and boring.
I think the script has a subtext of using the rules at your advantage to make a long sequence of active GM play
