Apple has released a new version of the MacBook Pro with Retina display, which now has Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the keyboard, changes the “Insane” graphics card to an “Radeon Pro” in exchange for an upgraded GPU, and has a new design that’s slimmed down from last year’s version.
The 12-inch screen now has a higher 2,880-by-1,800 resolution and a larger display area, but it’s slightly narrower than its predecessor at 28 percent larger. The new Retina display has a pixel density of 4,096 pixels per inch, which is approximately equivalent to the highest resolution 4K display and makes text and images on the screen look sharp, according to Apple.
Along with the new Retina display, the new MacBook Pro includes a top-of-the-line Radeon Pro graphics card that’s called the Radeon Pro 455. It boasts 2,972 stream processors along with 4GB of GDDR5 memory and should be capable of handling VR (virtual reality) and professional graphics that look good on the new MacBook Pro.
The new MacBook Pro also comes with Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the keyboard and includes a redesigned keyboard. It sports a new butterfly mechanism and the butterfly mechanism on the new MacBook Pro keyboard is said to be more durable than the old model. The built-in wireless charger no longer charges at a slower rate than a wired charger, however, according to Apple.
Pricing and availability
The new MacBook Pro with Retina display starts at $2,199 for the space gray version and $2,399 for the silver version, and it’s available for preorder online starting today. The new MacBook Pro with a standard-resolution Retina display will cost $1,799 and is also available for preorder starting today. The price starts at $1,799 for the silver version.
