In a traditional press, what is the purpose of the clackety-clack of the plate in the run-out?

When I first started working with a traditional screen press, the amount of clackety-clack that comes from the top of the screen that runs-out was mind-blowing. I learned that the clackety-clack was supposed to indicate when the material was fully in the bind and when the runout had started.
However, there’s also a clackety-clack that comes from the bottom of the plate as it drops back into the tank of the press, and it’s much louder and more annoying. I can only assume that this is the clackety-clack of the plate going back into the press as the “plate” as you call it moves the rest of the way.
However, there’s a point where the clackety-clack of the run-out starts to get quite quiet again, but there’s still a clackety-clack from the bottom of the plate, which seems to indicate that the material is about to go into the bind.
So, what does the noise actually mean? What’s the purpose of the clackety-clack of the plate in the run-out?
