I’d like to begin by pointing out that you will not find the Art of War in the EU4 manual. This is intentional: I wanted to give people an opportunity to experience this great book in a new and different way, while paying homage to what is undoubtedly one of the best military treatises ever written.

I’m going to do my best to explain what the Art of War is about and how it can apply to Europa Universalis IV, but keep in mind that I’m not going to explain every tactical situation you may face in the course of the game. The Art of War is primarily about “strategy” – how to win battles. While I hope that all of the military principles you may encounter while playing Europa Universalis IV – in this case many of the “arts of war” – also apply to warfare in the real world, they may not.

But, I will give you a few tips to help you master the Art of War. First, I want to assure you that there is nothing in this book that is going to “break the game.” It is a philosophical work. And just because it is philosophical, doesn’t mean you can’t learn from it. This book is designed to give you an understanding of the Art of War and how it can be applied to real world situations.

The first thing I would like to point out is that most of the content of this book has been carefully hand selected by the team at Paradox Interactive and myself. We have done a tremendous amount of research on the nature of warfare and the tactics that can be employed in order to adapt the philosophy of Sun Tzu’s Art of War to Europa Universalis IV. What’s new in Europa Universalis IV: Art Of War E-book:


I wrote recently about the launch of Europa Universalis IV, the fourth major expansion in Paradox’s strategy series. Paradox showed off the announcement trailer, let you watch a dev diary, and initiated a live-stream for the presentation. You can already grab a copy of the game for yourself through Paradox’s own official website by pre-ordering, and the book can be found through most major vendors including Amazon and the Paradox Store (via wishlist). For now, Paradox has also published a book by their lead writer and designer Josh Sawyer to give a behind the scenes look at Europa Universalis IV and the creation of its new Great Western War map.

The Art of War book includes Josh’s initial thoughts about how he has approached the writing for the game and his background history in the strategy game industry, as well as a guide that leads the reader through the development of the new map. Elsewhere in the book are interviews with those who played a part in the development process, as well as a preview of how buildings in the new game function. The book also gives a glance into some of the tasks and challenges that Paradox faced when working to create the new Great Western War map.

I talked to Josh Sawyer about the upcoming release. He explains how he presented the idea of how to write an entire map cycle, then tackled just one of Europa Universalis IV’s three existing map cycles. He also talks about his native Scotland, the inspiration for one of the new regions, and the kind of role he has taken in the development team.

Britannia: I think Paradox has always included a religious map in their games. Was it an existing map that you were inspired to base a new war on, or did you realize that a religious map would work and you wanted to give it a go?

Josh Sawyer: I was inspired by Crusader Kings 2. You’ll remember the map of Europe is very religious in Crusader Kings 2. I figured if people can create a map of Europe with a religious theme, why can’t we have a map of Europe with a diplomatic war-making theme? Obviously, a play-style of focusing on diplomacy in great detail was needed. I think we have achieved that.

BT: So, with that religious play-style in mind, how did you approach creating the process of writing a map cycle? Is it just the base idea of working out the scenarios you need to model the playable gameplay you want to achieve?
