How is it that we had a USB 2.0 standard for over a decade that was literally five times slower than USB 3.0, and then suddenly, one day, it got faster?
Well, it’s almost the same thing. After years of being the bane of all USB-A peripherals, the USB-C standard has come in from the cold. In addition to solving the old problem of how to take advantage of USB 3.0 speeds when your device manufacturer offers USB 2.0 ports, USB-C now offers the ability to use the same port for charging and data transfer, and even for charging via USB-C. With both Apple and the new Linux port of Windows 10 aiming for compatibility, adoption of the new standard will only increase.
Of course, the new standard comes with its own set of problems. USB-C is mostly problematic because it looks like a USB 2.0 port, and portability will be a huge factor. Weighing in at up to 9 times more than USB 3.0, its own port is slightly thicker than the former standard’s. The port also doesn’t include a protection mechanism like the USB 3.0 standard, so it can be a little more difficult to get a firm grip.
Unfortunately, of all the new USB ports, the standard that gets the most abuse is the new 4K HDMI port. HDMI used to be great, but it lost its way. Now, HDMI is slow, complicated, and it’s being charged by USB-C. With the port being able to charge up to a whopping 100W, it’s enough to fry your device. Companies like Intel, Corsair, and Lexar are all working on the new standard with the intention of the port to be the best USB-C port yet.
With all that said, it’s time to get on the next gen of peripherals and plug in your USB-C compatible devices with the official USB-C cord. With a USB-C port built in, the cable acts as the charging source and data conductor at the same time. The current models of USB-C cords
