Overall, the Genius Speed Wheel 6MT in all its glory is something I would recommend if you are looking for a reasonably priced and easy to use wheel for your PC. The market in this area is saturated with wheels, so if you can afford it, I would just get an extra controller. It might be easier and more fun in the long run than trying to try to play with this.
When you first open the box, you will see two C clamps on top. One of them, as the name implies, is for clamping the Speed Wheel on your computer desk. You will need to do a little work to activate the clamps before you can begin. If you took a look at the box, you should know how this is accomplished. A set of instructions are located on the bottom right side of the box, and they assume you have opened the box. To make your life easier, the following pictures are done to show you exactly what we are talking about. As you can see, the left clamp provides access to the positive side of the battery terminal, while the right clamp is for the negative. The negative clamp is used whenever you are charging the battery. In our case, the Speed Wheel 6MT, is currently sitting in its charging cradle, and the wheel is powered on. To remove the clamps, you simply lift the rubber tabs that connects them to the negative battery terminal. Since this is a manual setting, you will have to do some trial and error to find out exactly what you need to do to get it working. Again, this is done for your ease of installation.
Okay, so now that the clamps are cleared up, let us take a look at the Speed Wheel itself. It is first important to note that the pedal base requires a bulky foot to get it to work. This is by design, but in our opinion, it is just an eyesore to look at. Anyways, the Speed Wheel 6MT does have a couple of unique features to its design. The left pedal base allows for tilt, as we have mentioned before; on the right side, you have the gear shifter. Unlike the previous sample Genius wheel we reviewed, the gear shifter has a soft plastic covering, designed to make it comfortable to use. From this point on, the exterior of the Speed Wheel 6MT is going to look familiar; its rounded curves are the same as the rest of the Genius wheel family. On the top, you have a navigation switch which you can use for toggling the camera view, menu display, and music player. This has nothing to do with gameplay, but we just thought we would mention it for completeness.
All in all, for someone who is looking for a decent racing wheel for around $60, the Genius Speed Wheel 6MT is a great option. It has good force feedback, a reasonable wheel rotation, but comes with some minor flaws. Overall, its a pretty simple solution for anyone on a budget.
As far as look goes, it is not bad looking. The somewhat tough-looking design is kind of eye catching, and the center part of the wheel that looks like a cross between a pug and a king cobra. The pug/cobra is quite a scary looking thing, and is the stuff of nightmares for some (Me included). When you lift your foot up, the head of the creature is supposed to pop off, mimicking what a cobra does. Let me know if this bothers you. So do I get any performance I asked myself, Do I need all this force feedback stuff anyway? In my case, I didn’t have a satisfactory answer for this one. Again, a racing wheel without a pedal base will not give you true force feedback, so I was just toying with the idea of going with a cheapo wheel. By the time I had clicked the above picture, I had already given the project a shot of nerve center, since I went ahead and bought it anyway.
But even after buying the roll of the dice, if you are ever considering investing in such a piece of hardware, please do read all the reviews in the link above. The point is to make sure you are getting the right equipment for your purposes. So I was spending good money on hardware which I didn’t need, and which couldn’t possibly give me that much performance. It took me way to long to really weigh my options in my mind. But, I gave up and just went ahead and bought the Genius Speed Wheel. Here is what it looks like:
