‘Hancock’ belongs to Bollywood. As such, it has a standard Bollywood vibe that’s familiar but also appropriately paced for a film. The music, in particular, feels truer to the period and era of the film than more recent films. It’s not that there’s bad music, but there are a lot of opportunities to get repetitive and it just doesn’t provide that sense of familiarity that I’d expect from Hindi films. Bollywood music has its own charms, and this movie works on other levels. It’s wacky, silly, energetic and a bit goofy. The music is great.
This is a female-centric superhero story. The female lead is super sexy, extremely sassy, and pretty cool. But director Peter Berg, who has made numerous films featuring women, doesn’t focus on Jane Lynch’s roles. Instead, it’s all about the action, which is where it counts. There are two ‘Hancocks,’ one male and one female, in the movie. There is action galore, of course, but as a female viewer, it just isn’t my favorite kind. Berg has made action films where it’s the women who get the stage time. In ‘Hancock,’ that isn’t necessarily the case, and the female character is one of the weakest points.
The real strength of ‘Hancock’ is the amount of action. Given the limitations of superhero films, the only direction that can be taken is action. If you can’t make a superhero movie as an action movie, then you just don’t have a movie at all. ‘Hancock’ is full of fast action sequences, and it has an energy level that makes it fun. The characters are generic, but some of the characters have a personality that allows for some fun in these generic roles. If nothing else, the action should serve to entertain. The problem is that, aside from the broad humor, there are no characters who are worth caring about. It’s all about the action, and I had plenty of fun with the action, but the overall experience is a little unfocused and uncharacterized.
