I am creating a Python game, and I have a list of tiles. This list is a top-down, side scrolling RPG tile map. There is a certain tile which to my knowledge has a solid body and functions as a wall.
When I attempt to search a position for this tile, I try the following code:
tilemap = [list() for _ in range(1024)]
for x in range(0, 1024, 1):
for y in range(0, 1024, 1):
if self.player.tilemap.index(‘WALL’) > -1:
tilemap[x][y] = 3
But for some reason, this does not work. Here is the results of running the code:
So it finds the correct tile, but it does not assign to it the correct value.
I know that its just a matter of getting it to do what I want, but I am curious as to why this is happening.

The problem is that you are not updating the tile, and then indexing into the tile, but rather just indexing the tile.
The tile variable, not self.player.tilemap, will get the actual tile that you index from. Instead, you need to assign to the tile (also notice you don’t need the list() in the for loop):
for x in range(0, 1024, 1):
for y in range(0, 1024, 1):
if self.player.tilemap.index(‘WALL’) > -1:
self.player.tilemap.setdefault(‘WALL’, [])[x][y] = 3
