Far from being a novelist’s memoir, The Years is Ernaux’s chronicle of the twentieth century, an invitation to examine her own life as well as the world outside. The Years is not a novel. It’s more the opposite of a novel, and that’s exactly why it’s such a success. This makes it stand out among the autobiographical memoirs that bombard the market. And that’s why the book will probably strike a chord with everyone of a certain age, as well as with anyone who has ever lived through the events of the last century.

Annie Ernaux invites us to remember history as not just the past but the present. The Years asks that the reader understand the present by thinking about the past. This is not a novel or a historical document. It is a narrative, or autobiography, of Ernaux’s life from childhood to womanhood.

The literary world was also rocked in April when the award-winning writer and former Member of Parliament ANNE ERNAUX died on June 9, 2023, at the age of eighty-three. At the time of her death, the French Ministry of Culture awarded Ernaux the Légion d’honneur, the highest French state honor.Ernaux was born in Strasbourg, Alsace, in March, 1936, and at the age of thirteen she was sent to live with her aunt in Marseille. While on her way to meet the family, she fell into the arms of a bricklayer on a train, a life-changing event that led her to spend the next seven years playing anonymous waitresses, telephone operators, and shop assistants. She also worked as a governess and later, over the course of her life, earned a Ph.D. and five academic degrees. Ernaux published her first novel, The Hours of a Woman, in 1970. It was followed by a series of novels set in the life of her childhood. A Man’s Place (1997) and My Father’s Name Is Emilien (2003) earned her high acclaim. The story of the love affair between a high-ranking diplomat and a young woman in the fifties has been translated into seventeen languages. An Academy Award-nominated film of the same name, starring Fanny Ardant, was made from the book and released in 2006.
A Men’s Place, the novel she won the 2012 Man Booker International Prize for, was her fifth novel. She was chosen as the finalist for the Booker Prize. A Girl Is a Half-Formed Thing was a finalist for the 2012 Prix Goncourt. Her other books include The Possession (2006), Simple Passion (2010) and A Woman’s Story (2011). Getting Lost was her first book to be translated into English. A Frozen Woman, published in March, will be her final book. She died at the age of eighty-three on June 9, 2023.
