a month ago, on a cold saturday in the rocky mountains, i was given a history lesson in how to play the blues. my teacher was peter fischer, a guitarist for the rock band cactus who taught me how to play by ear. mr. fischer was a master, but he had one thing missing: he didn’t know the blues. his influence was just as important to me as bill frisell’s. i learned how to play by using mr. fischer’s music. he taught me, if there is such a thing as the blues, you should play it.
mr. fischer has been called many things. a master. a genius. a rock legend. he’s been a jazz musician, a hard rocker, a rockabilly player, a hard rock fusionist, a blues guitarist, and a blues singer. no matter what he’s called, he’s a blues player.
i first got to know mr. fischer through a canadian journalist who assured me that i was in for a great treat. i told her i was a fan of his but i had never seen him live. the journalist laughed. “oh no, not the blues guitar legend,” she said. “what are you talking about?”
that was enough to convince me to go. i had been looking for a good blues guitarist for a long time. i had tried bill frisell, david grisman, and john scofield. my only exposure to mr. fischer had been to his three albums for ecm records, and to a few of his live performances. mr. fischer had been one of the first musicians to leave the blues behind and progress to the harder, more technical side of rock. his music is one of the most fascinating of the early days.
mr. fischer, at age 39, has become an elder statesman of rock. he starts out each evening with his guitar and voice and moves through a series of long, slow blues numbers. occasionally, he sings a few lines of a black-american-style song. he’s a bluesman who has lived through the blues. and, like many bluesmen, he has many stories to tell.
