As it turns out, Peter and Quagmire have to get used to the outside world, including doing the bathroom business in public. They even have to learn how to be adults for a while. Watching these episodes, it is clear that Peter was forever an immature child, who only acted like an adult for a few weeks. While he eventually matures into a kind and caring individual, it is slightly depressing, as his change from a child into an adult turns into an automatic and very quick transition.
Peter’s become a running gag in the series, and for good reason. Over the years, he has done some truly terrible things, from selling his virginity, to almost killing Quagmire, to being quite trigger happy, just because he thought he knew a trick. Peter also has some rather brilliant moments, such as a quick wit and a deft with words (with either lame, off-color humor, or clever wordplay and jokes).
Peter seems to be hit and miss on the show. There are episodes where he is full of confidence and self-assured, and then there are episodes where he is nothing but an immature fool. It is also interesting to see how the tone of the show changes when Peter is around. Peter has always been fairly lackadaisical in attitude, much like Quagmire. He has a dim perspective of life, much like Quagmire, and while he is more cynical than he is happy, he is fundamentally positive and a good soul. However, in his absence, things quickly change, and the show becomes darker and angrier, such as season 6’s Gil’s Greek Tragedy, where the writers use the episode and Peter’s absence to create an extremely violent episode.
