the turkish public is closely watching the constitutional amendments and erdogans role in them. many turks believe that he used the amendments as a pretext to revise the constitution and weaken the turkish military. although the turkish military commands a lot of respect from turks, it is seen by many as being too independent and political. erdogans statements and actions suggest that he is not afraid of the army. he wants to make turkey a modern and democratic country and this may interfere with its role as guarantor of the constitution. erdogans popularity in turkey, however, may not be determined by his actions but by his comments on the arab spring. turks are in the midst of a national debate about the legacy of that revolution. can turkey benefit from the change?
turkey has a long tradition of practicing islam and turks are known to be hospitable and generous to their muslim neighbors. erdogans comments on the arab spring are therefore not surprising. what is surprising, however, is the speed with which turks have turned against arabs and muslims. erdogans vitriolic remarks about arabs and muslims are becoming a tool to deflect criticism of his government and to play on the emotions of turks. although the entire arab world is against erdogans remarks, they will be much more effective in turkey. the turkish public is furious at the israeli bombing of gaza and about the lack of support for the palestinians in the arab spring. the turkish government claims to be pro-democracy, but erdogans attacks on arabs and muslims are aimed at discrediting the arab spring and at bringing turks back to the fold.
