Preparing the canvas

Before you start drawing, you must prepare the canvas. As explained in the preceding section, the canvas is a virtual space where you lay out and draw your images, and the tools in this chapter are available only in that canvas. If you go outside of the canvas, you lose all the tools, and you can’t return to the canvas until you close the file.

The following list includes some of the basic tasks you can perform in the canvas with the tools that are available:

Create a new layer: Click the Create a New Layer icon (shown in the margin). Or, simply double-click the layer name on the Layers panel in the thumbnail view. Either way creates a new layer and opens the Layers dialog box, where you can adjust the attributes of the layer, see some sample thumbnail views, and so on.

Create a file format: Select a file format on the Format Pulldown menu, a shortcut for the File pull-down menu. If you see the Design Options button, click it, and you can change the options available when saving a file, as well as other general settings. If you see the Save for Web button, click it to create your new file in the web-ready Photoshop file format.

Reduce file size: After you finish a file, you may want to save it in a smaller file size. If you don’t, the file can take up a lot of room on your hard drive, especially if you have several drawing files on the same drive.

Increase layer resolution: You can increase the layer resolution in a file. Some tools work better with a high resolution because of the magnification. For example, if you have an image that is 300 pixels wide and 300 pixels tall, you can reduce the resolution of that layer to 72 pixels wide by 72 pixels tall. You can resize layers by using the Image Size dialog box or the Resize Layer (Image Size) button on the Layers panel.

Increase contrast: If your image is too dark or too light, you can adjust the contrast to correct the problem. The Adjust Lighting/Color dialog box

You can start using Photoshop Elements by clicking the Start button in the lower left corner.

Creating a new document

Photoshop Elements is a tool for editing images. You can edit images from the web or create new ones from scratch.

To start editing an image, select one from the files found in your computer in your computer files and navigate to it by clicking on it in the Files window.

From here, you can use the touch screen or the mouse to select the various parts of the image you wish to work on.

While a mouse is easier to use, you can also use the touch screen. This makes the tool more comfortable when you’re working on the go.

Toolbars and palettes

So I have a rails application. I am new to Rails. I am working on an assignment where I have to create a shopping cart using a database that’s already designed. So far, I have been able to create the cart data in the view, then send it to the controller so that the view can display it. But when I try to add the product into the cart, and allow the user to purchase it, the cart and the data from the database itself does not show up.
I want to know how I can get the product input from the form in my create view to the cart controller, so that it will be able to add the product to the cart.

Civil rights groups call on lawmakers to reject ‘Republican-led’ plan on schools

The Senate Education Committee is scheduled to begin work on a slate of education bills Tuesday, but one particular proposal has drawn the ire of civil rights groups.

Sen. Jennifer Sullivan, R-Sprague, and House Education Committee Chairman Peter Judge, R-Lisbon, are sponsoring a bill that would amend the state constitution to prohibit “adverse legislative, executive or judicial action against any school districts, school corporations, or schools for their compliance with the federal No Child Left Behind Act.”

Gov. John Hoeven, Senate Majority Leader Michael Turpen and House Speaker Dave Peterson have co-sponsored the constitutional amendment, which was included in a package of education bills they announced Monday.

It appears to be the main proposal in the package, though Sullivan said during a meeting with editorial writers for the Des Moines Register that the measure was first written by Paul Walker, an opponent of the federal education law that is being overhauled by Republican-led Congress.

Court challenges under NCLB have led to major changes in education rules and policies under the federal government.

Sullivan, who is running for the Republican nomination to unseat Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., said school districts are being asked to take more than they could under NCLB, and the measure that is being considered in the Legislature doesn’t go far enough.

“In our view the amendment is too restrictive to the U.S. Constitution,” she said. “It’s too restrictive to the state’s ability to make decisions on its own. So, we’re really calling on our fellow Republicans to not go down that route.”

The constitutional amendment is supposed to limit state intervention in school-funding matters, but critics say it would require the state to waive its veto power over what schools can do regarding NCLB or its waiver plan.

If adopted, it would amend Article XI of the Constitution, which says the state and citizens have the “exclusive right to make laws for the establishment of a general and uniform system of public schools and for levying money for public schools.”

Doug Bernstein, executive director of the New Mexico branch of the American Civil Liberties Union, said the measure is asking state lawmakers to give away a valuable constitutional right.
