This article will take you through how to open an image in Photoshop, create a new layer, use layer masks, use the marquee tool and crop an image.
Steps
1. Click the Open button on the Photoshop menu bar.
2. Place an image into the Photoshop window.
3. The Open dialog box will appear, asking you where you’d like to locate your image.
4. Click the folder icon to locate your image, select the folder and click OK.
5. If you’re working with a single image, the Open dialog box will appear and your image will automatically be imported to the Photoshop program. If you’re working with multiple images, Photoshop will prompt you to choose the images that you’d like to work on.

7. Photoshop will return to the Open dialog box.
8. Again, click OK to continue with your work.
9. If you’d like to make a copy of your image for use in a later project, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard while clicking on the picture you want to copy.
10. After releasing the Ctrl key, Photoshop will ask if you want to copy the image.
11. Click the checkbox next to Copy.
12. Click OK.
13. If you’d like to make a copy of the image so that you can use it again, a dialog box will appear asking whether you’d like to Save a Copy of the image.
14. Click Save.
15. Place the image into the working area.
16. If you’re working with a sequence of images, press Ctrl + J to add them all to the working area.
17. When you’re finished, click the File button on the Photoshop menu bar.
18. The Open dialog box will again appear.
19. From this screen you can choose to locate a different image to work on.
20. Click OK.
21. Again, the Open dialog box will open and all the images will be selected.
22. If you’d like to change the name of the image, click on the Save button and type in a new name.
23. Click OK.
24. If you’re finished with your image, click OK.

Effective policy that is not good policy
I’ve had a rather interesting debate the other day. It started from a tweet, then took a turn into discussion in a online forum, and eventually a blog post. It was a bit difficult to sum up the discussion in one place because it was a complex issue. In fact, it was a really good discussion, and I think that it is a good case study that demonstrates some interesting things about the current political philosophy in NZ.
The starter tweet was from someone who had seen a letter posted on a website that allegedly complained about a policy that prevents non-Maori from living in a neighbourhood with a Maori-owned home. The letter was signed by — you guessed it — Grant Robertson and David Clark ( I think ) and had been posted to one of the political blogs. I pointed out that this policy seems to be in breach of the (current ) Labour Party’s Social Investment Policy.
In the discussion, this got turned into a general discussion about whether protecting Maori interests and preventing them being swamped by foreigners, rather than protecting them from the effects of residential segregation, is a good thing. As usually happens with such complex issues, the discussion got a bit tangled, but I think I have a decent summary.
A policy that promotes Maori individualism
At its heart, the ‘Maori policy’ seems to rely on a number of assumptions:
Maori have a unique culture and a special relationship with the land that the rest of us just don’t understand.
It is OK to treat Maori like a special and very different minority group, because that’s just how the world works.
If someone is a Maori, they are better than someone who is not, and has a special moral entitlement to being treated as such.
That this is the right approach to policy-making should be obvious. In fact, it is more an indictment of a particular view of politics than the actual policy that is under discussion. ( I really ought to do a bit more deconstruction of Labour politics. But, that’s a different blog.)
The policy seems to be a statement that Maori have a unique problem that we should respond to with a policy of Maori individualism. That is, instead of fighting racial discrimination, we should simply make the people of Auckland, and other urban areas of NZ, Maori, and give them greater opportunities and choices

Kelly has not responded publicly, but he has released a statement via his attorney.
“The recording, which was taken without my knowledge, has been misconstrued and used by some to tarnish my name and reputation. I am deeply hurt by these false allegations. I have been damaged and have lost business as a result of my name being dragged through the mud,” he said. “I can only hope that my family, loved ones and fans can find it in their hearts to know that this is not true. I have never been guilty of this sort of behavior and I am not guilty today.”
Kelly’s comments are consistent with what he’s said about this in the past, and there’s no reason to think he will backtrack. The women who’ve been talking to the press have all been black, a fact that has intensified Kelly’s problematic legacy. At this point, it’s difficult to see him getting a second chance to move on.
Kelly is still beloved among black fans. He’s rapped about the funk and known to be a champion of Miami hip-hop. He’s also made an effort to reach out to black artists and supported the Obama administration’s “Chance the Rapper
