on the other hand, the antagonists in testament are incredibly memorable. our favorite villain, the oily, scheming, and unassuming inspector lestrade, is a delightfully conniving addition to the series. he steals the show from the get-go, and his way of avoiding holmes at the beginning of the game is absolutely hilarious. the third antagonist, irene adler, is a delightfully sassy, no nonsense woman who knows what she wants, and who isn’t afraid to pull out a gun to get it.
set in victorian london, the testament of sherlock holmes follows on directly from the events of the hound of baskerville, an earlier game in the series. a mysterious package arrives for the master detective and the storyline follows immediately from that of the previous game, although there are a few new twists that ensure its quite different from the hound of baskerville. in this case, a letter is sent by holmes to watson, but the recipient is a young girl, laura hawkins, who has discovered his former partner’s journal and wants to know the truth about his final days. unfortunately, the truth is far from simple, and the girl has her own agenda that will cost lives if it is not met.
as with most sherlock holmes games, the gameplay is based on deduction. the interface is based around the board, which has seven columns and seven rows. the number of clues in each cell can vary from nothing to three, which are denoted by the numbers ‘0’, ‘1’ and ‘2’. clues appear to be in many different forms; a fingerprint on a door, footprints, cigar butts, bloodstains, footprints and more can all be used to play the game. of course, if you can deduce what the clue is then youll get to add it to the board.
This first Adventures of Sherlock Holmes title set in the Victorian age focuses on the story of Sherlock Holmes versus Jack the Ripper. Although there is a Holmes-like character in the game, you can ignore his existence, as the game focuses on the detective. In contrast with the first 2 games in the series, this installment features a completely different style of play. Whereas the previous titles placed a greater emphasis on puzzles, Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper places a higher emphasis on engaging stories and puzzles that make a great use of the game’s environment. This is the first installment in the series to make use of fully 3D environments, and they are all very impressive in terms of both their design and graphical quality. As in the other games in the series, the gameplay is broken up into scenes of different scenes, and the camera zooms in as a prelude to the next scene. As you play the game, the camera eventually settles down to a more stationary position, and you are presented with clues to make the best deductions. After 10 or so hours, the story is over, but the experience has been well worth it.
The story of The Testament of Sherlock Holmes is really interesting. Despite having less of a wow factor than the first two Adventures of Sherlock Holmes entries, it is still a very enjoyable experience. The game begins with Sherlock Holmes being hired to solve the case of Jack the Ripper, and is given a book filled with information about the Ripper murders. In addition to having Holmes solve the case, a journal is filled with letters from people connected to Holmes’ past, and some of those letters are used as dialogue for the story. The story takes place around the time that the Ripper murders became public, and the events that unfolded around the murders, and those of the killers, help shed light on why Sherlock Holmes was so obsessed with the case.
