a superior mix of plectrum electronica and face2face, the newest album by dj/producer/sound engineer prince is a very special edition vinyl record. while prince did not perform on this record, we know the song, so we have selected this track to represent this release. ‘plectrum electronica’ was one of his earliest electronic experiments, and was performed by prince at his first ever performance. this version is a re-mixed and re-mastered version of this track, originally released in 1992 on the album plectrum electronica.
the album is dedicated to prince’s great friend, and partner, wendy melvoin, who died after suffering from breast cancer in february 2016. this album has been inspired and designed by prince’s longtime friend and manager, susan rogers. the album is fully produced by prince and includes the original artwork made by susan rogers.
the ‘true’ album was never released in this format or at this price. it’s a cd in a gatefold sleeve with a download code for the album. it also includes all the tracks from the album’s digital version.
‘true’ was the only prince album not released on cd and vinyl. the album was recorded on a 4-track tape machine at his home and released as a cassette. it was released on the purple line record label, and is only available via mail-order.
prince recorded the tracks for the album, along with his band the new power generation, on his 4-track reel-to-reel tape machine with a white samson microphone, then transferred the tape to a cdr at his home studio. prince’s then-girlfriend and assistant of ten years, susan rogers, mixed the album in prince’s home studio in minneapolis.
only 2000 copies of the album were made, and only 1000 were mailed to prince’s fans. this was the only vinyl release of the album until the cd reissue. it features a print of the original art by susan rogers on the gatefold cover.

decca should have gotten through the late 1970s without any of the major label litigation that would culminate in warner/chappells legendary lawsuit against apple computer over that companys use of the macintosh computer. but its label home was not immune to the madness that would soon sweep across the music industry, and the company had reason to fear what might happen if there were a similar infringement on its mpa (master recording act) rights.it could have been worse. as much as decca eventually lost, it could have lost the country altogether. the only major label to be targeted for boycott was columbia, but decca had a strong ally in the form of the record industrys largest and most powerful union, the american federation of musicians. music companies had been putting their artists out of business by undercutting the unions rates, and the afms leadership made sure that its members got the message. by 1980, the afms boycott had forced the labels to agree to a collective bargaining agreement with the union that guaranteed musicians a minimum of $30,000 per year plus health and pension benefits. the record labels had agreed to higher rates in return for the unions backing on record piracy, which had become a major concern. decca was protected, and a copyright lawsuit would not be a possibility.but decca was not immune to the industrys woes, as its pre-mpa legal battles against the beatles had taught it. that label was fighting for its own survival, and had to pay out money to other labels who claimed that the beatles had infringed their copyright. decca also came under fire for giving the beatles its musical library. an industry trade publication blamed the beatles for the downfall of decca because of its library deal with them. by the time the mpa was agreed to, decca was already bankrupt and the label had to file for bankruptcy protection. decca was forced to bring in outside investors to keep the label afloat. these investors, who were already looking for a comeback of their own, didn’t care if the label had always been a victim of the majors, and they wanted to be assured that they could make money from the company. they wanted to be the ones running decca, not its executives and legal team. so the investors began to use decca to bludgeon the labels that were still in business. the decca label was used to strike deals with other labels for its artists, and the labels were forced to pay the labels for the decca catalogue to be distributed. then one of the investors found the mpa as a way to limit the label’s mpa revenue, and he began lobbying congress for its passage. the labels ultimately won out and the mpa passed, but it was not without a fight. the controversy surrounding the mpa and the fact that the largest music company in the world, warner/chappell, was suing over the use of the macintosh would provide ammunition for the record industrys battle against apple. in the end, decca had a long recovery and survived to become a major force in the music industry. while the decca/warner label was owned by warner communications, the decca label was a trademark owned by warner chappell music. the decca label was used by decca to release its back catalog, including its huge catalog of classical music. this mid-price album is a tribute to the decca label, and includes a handful of decca/warner chappell artists, including elton john, diana krall, carla bley, natalie cole, della reese, and the swingin’ string section.
