publiceve foundation,south delhi, india,blacklisted. 95.. k.c.a sahab, shivaji park, church road, sion, mumbai-400 006. nota blacklisted. public administration. dsp hidaya. 10.000.00. dsp syed.blogging about issues that matter and everything else that comes to mind along the way. monday, november 19, 2010 starting 2018 with a clean conscience year after year has brought a little more of what it would be nice to have always. love, money, health, a few moments of true pleasure.just a little more everything all the time. the cost is surely dear but is it only in the things? or is it also in what the things mean, what they say, how they live their lives? being conscious about my purchases has been a great thing. i don’t mean to give the impression that i am prudish. all the time i see people engaging in all sorts of comforts that put me to shame. what is interesting is that often the answer is right in front of them. it can’t be denied that our need for comfort, for relaxation and for conviviality is a major driving force behind the toys we buy and the items that we accumulate. i don’t condemn someone for enjoying the simple things. what i do condemn is the level of denial that i still see in some people in their attitude towards comfort, for their willingness to let the children play with toys that they would never play with themselves. for their willingness to live without true restraint. i have read a great deal recently about charles dickens and he has made very similar observations about our comfort with the things. in fact his observations are so true and so simply made that i take exception in this blog to my own use of the word ‘true’. i have already attempted to define that word and it is for me a very hard thing to define. i think it is a good thing, a natural thing, a good thing that we do want our homes to be filled with beautiful things. i also think it is a natural thing that there are children at the centre of those homes. in my mind those are two things that are close enough to consider true. i think we would all be happier if we didn’t deny these things or anything else that brings us pleasure. i think we would all be happier if we accepted that happiness is not something that comes to us by an act of will. we have a right to be happy and we are meant to be happy. if we do not feel this sometimes, if we do not feel it often, then we need to do something about it. i want to stop denying the things that i want and i want to see less of the things that i don’t want. it is not a’moral’ or a’religious’ thing that i am talking about. it is simply a logical thing that i do with my brain. i can deny my wants, and deny the things that i do not want, and i can embrace the truth and acknowledge the things that i want. it is all there in my brain. if i do not accept these things and the right to want them, the right to be happy, then i am denying myself. denying myself is not good. denying myself is not what i want.
