Although I wasn’t particularly looking for another RPG, I have become a big fan of Path of Exile and its sequel Afterbirth. The first one pushed my PvP-minded character to its limits, and the second one gave me a taste of End-game PvE, and I just loved it. The world is just so imaginative and the play style just sticks out as being different and exciting. It’s definitely a unique RPG, but I have to say, it makes some unfortunate comparison’s with The Legend of Dragoon. Really, the worlds are probably more reminiscent of NieR than NieR itself, but it still stands out. I would, however, like to point out that the final boss battle in Path of Exile had an incredible sequence that I loved, so I guess it’s just an overall satisfying boss fight.

Now for the review, I have to say that I did not play this game until after the Afterbirth update which I believe added Caves and the Shrine of Two Worlds feature. That being said, this is what I loved about the game right out of the gate:

Path of Exile has a pretty simple controls setup, with the exception of block, dodge roll, and manually aiming spells. The controls themselves are quite simple as well, although not as easy as they might appear. For example, the dodge roll button looks pretty straightforward and yet there are people who actually get surprised when you press that button by mistake. In order to dodge attacks, you need to hold the button and then press the direction in which you want to roll. This includes normal rolls as well as when you have ToT equipped.

With that out of the way, lets get to the meat of the game. Path of Exile’s currency is called Relics, and currency can be used to unlock equipment. You start with a small inventory that can be expanded up to a certain limit, and a starting small pool of Silver-Bronze. Once you get your silver-bronze, you can go to your Siege (Shop) and buy new items. Starting from the shop, you can easily buy things like extra inventory slots or fast travel spots. Monster Battles

Monster Battles are carried out by selecting “War” from the Menu. Monsters which can be dealt with with a weapon are displayed on the bottom screen. A monster’s attack power, Magic Stone consumption rate, damage, defense, and other characteristics are displayed on the screen.

The right and left arrows keys are used to select and interact with a monster. The X and B keys select to attack or use a magic, and the L key is used to switch between weapon and magic. When a monster is attacked by a weapon, a Blue X appears on the screen if the monster has a weak spot, and a Red X appears if the monster is strong.
