The environments are beautiful and well designed, and I am genuinely excited to see more of the open world in a future update. It may very well be that is just my experience playing on PC, but I didn’t feel the need to revisit locations after finishing them.

The characters feel simplistic, but this is actually not necessarily a bad thing. Tarnished is fun to play, but not particularly deep. Seeing a robot break a sword into pieces is a kind of relief when your character does something so trivial. It’s not that I was expecting something more advanced, but the toy-like art style fits perfectly.

The enemies range from straight up generic fantasy archetypes like orcs, ogres, skeleton knights to characters like, say, a very specific The Witcher 3 character. As a veteran of the genre, I didn’t find that terribly surprising, though what was surprising was the amount of variation in the game. The RPG elements lend a sense of weight and class to the overall setting and aesthetic, and it is interesting to see how they manifest themselves in the less “fantasy”-ish enemies.

With the “muscle” system unlocked, it is easy to level up. The abilities you unlock are all pretty standard fare, which I found charming in its familiarity. I do hope that there’s a bit more variety in the abilities down the road. Even then, though, the options are neither trivial nor detrimental.

The “3D” attacks are fun to pull off, but often impractical. I was able to get a few enemies stuck by being so focused on a specific opponent. It is possible to get a larger “monster” hurt by using the right weapon, but it’s still not something I’d really want to do in-game. Rather than go into a lengthy description of the combat system, I’ll just say that though it is more complex than it first appears, it’s ultimately still a 2D action game at heart.

The TPs and APs are fun to use on your own, and are mostly useful for shortcutting a questline or screwing around with NPCs. Although the descriptors are a bit generic, you can tell that they were written by fans of the series, and the account of how to play the game is fantastic.

From a structural standpoint, the game is rather unique. The story thread is not just one gigantic, connected narrative, but it is made up of 15 episodes. The pacing is uneven, but this is
