I haven't played the original but what I can see the draw of the game is the unique combat system that rewards you for "Grace" which gives you skill points to improve a variety of skills. If you want to rush through the game you can of course do that, but you will be remiss if you miss the opportunity to buy and improve every skill you possibly can and that has a big impact on the combat. I think they did a good job making the upgrade system evolve too, you see the first set of bonuses you get has a lot of impact on how the system evolves. Trading gains on one skill will yield experience on another, which provides a good win-win benefit.
Personally I think it's a fair bit like Runescape, only in RPG terms. If you enjoy combat you can probably find some enjoyment out of it. If it's not your bag, it's still "fun" to play so you will probably just enjoy it.
