Reset Password Management offers end-users an interface that is both secure and easy to use. At the same time, administrators are offered full control over the validation process.
They determine the validation questions and specify how many questions must be correctly answered to allow a password reset. This virtually eliminates any possible errors in the reset password process.
Less involvement of IT staff
Password reset requests form a substantial part of all helpdesk calls. Such requests often show a peak on Monday morning and during holiday seasons. Higher call volumes will not only require extra staff to cope with the frustrating task of resetting passwords. An organization also runs the risk that other important Helpdesk tasks remain unattended or unresolved.
The password requests volume is also related to the password procedures in an organization. The volume will increase significantly if the password complexity rules are enabled. The same will likely happen if the period allowed for a password reset is reduced.
With SSRPM, end-users can reset their own passwords. They do not have to wait until the helpdesk can service their requests. This will drastically reduce both user downtime and the number of calls to the Helpdesk.
Increased security
Few organizations have a strong policy in place for lodging and servicing reset password requests. Imagine the consequences if an employee calls the Helpdesk for a password reset request, pretending to be the senior financial officer John Smith.
How does it work?
Self Service Reset Password Management is based on the principle that an end-user can reset his own password, without involvement of the helpdesk, by simply answering a series of challenge questions (e.g. What is the name of your best friend).
Here are some key features of “Reset Password Management”:
General
■ “Forgot my password” button on the login dialog.
■ Multiplatform support, to be able to for instance reset the password of a user account on other systems, like: UNIX, Linux, Novell and a lot more.

Very poor!
In a perfect world, reset password should come with a phone call. In our world, organizations do not want to call! Administrators, therefore, need to create a secure and user friendly way to reset passwords. This should be a process where end-users do not get stuck in loops of answers and confusing/static “Forgot your password?” pages.
SSRPM has none of these things. This product either will not connect to AD or will crash and fail in the process. This is NOT a reliable product.
Having said that, if this product were to work, it would be a great feature!
Moreover, password policies, as a whole, are not “user friendly”. Password policies have been designed to prevent users from using simple passwords that can be “cracked” by looking at your IP address. The requirement for passwords to be “7 characters” is also a poor solution. There are many websites that have 1000 character passwords, and this makes user management a real headache.
The other major problem is the no user interaction with SSRPM in the reset process. This is a sure sign of poor development. End-users will have no idea how to get past the validation screen. The simple idea of a “Forgot my password” page would be a much better way to have password resets. Then administrators, and/or the IT staff, can access to the page and handle the validation process.
Conclusion: If you purchase this product, please do NOT use it. Please visit their webpage to see the functionality and learn how it works.

Used SSRPM to replace cumbersome homegrown “reset password” system.
A bit slow, but it can be tuned to work well.
Admins can capture passwords via certificate expiration.

For my use case, I found the SSRPM to be a fairly easy and user-friendly method of resetting passwords. When working with a large organization, this can go a long way in streamlining that one function (password resets).
However, the product has a few areas that can be improved:
1) There is no interface to allow the sys admins to delete questions for users who have not completed them. While this is a nice feature, it is critical to the use of the product.
2) The password change tool will sometimes

SSRPM Client (Application) is a stand alone Windows application. SSRPM Client is designed to:
– Convert the user password to a meaningful form for the end user
– Create the questions that need to be answered by the end-user to be able to reset his/her password
– Directly insert the end-user answers into the end-user account
– Provide easy access to the user and to the password data
– Provide a user feedback about the password reset procedures
– Allow administration of password policy
SSRPM Client does not store the password information in any way. To provide a safe password reset experience to the end-user, the Client application is based on the following principles:
1. The application is not linked to any database
2. The application is not connected to the computer on which the end-user submitted his reset request
3. It uses an automated, highly secure algorithm for “typing” the passwords to be reset
4. The end-user answers are only displayed to the end-user (encrypted with MD5 hashing algorithms)
5. An end-user can reset his password immediately without involving a helpdesk agent
6. An end-user can use his password immediately to log in
SSRPM Client is multi platform and designed to be flexible. It is now available in German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese, Dutch and English.
End-user wizard is designed to guide the end-user to reset his or her password in a secure, easy, and fluent manner. End-user wizard is based on question and answer dialog boxes. The questions are displayed in a very friendly, graphical, wizard format. The answers are suggested to the end-user, based on previous answers. End-user wizard creates the questions that need to be answered to successfully complete the password reset process. Additionally, an end-user wizard provides a helpdesk feature that quickly enables/disables the reset request.
A SSRPM policy specifies the default account which receives the account password reset request.
SSRPM Server is a Windows Server service. SSRPM Server is designed to:
– Collect all password reset requests coming from the end-user and from the helpdesk
– Compare end-user submitted answers with the answers stored in the database
– Properly encrypt the end-user answers and store them in the database

The SSRPM Administration Console is not available for the following languages:
The
installation of the Password Management database must be done in the following installation modes:
Full mode, deployment mode and automatic mode.
Full mode mode is the most secure mode. In this mode the SSRPM admin console and the administration tools are deployed in the application server. The client side components of the SSRPM Admin Console are stored in the database and are only downloaded when the user access the administration console. The client side components of the administration tools can be stored in a database located on the application server or on a client machine.
Deployment mode and automatic mode is less secure than full mode, as the client components of the SSRPM Admin Console and the administration tools are not stored in the database. The client components of the SSRPM Admin Console and the administration tools are installed on the client machines with the help of InstallShield software.
The full installation mode is recommended for large organizations, with a sufficient budget.
When installing the Password Management database in deployment or automatic mode, you should specify the location of the database file and the location of the application server. These settings can be changed.
When the database is no longer used, you should delete the application and database files.
The following libraries are mandatory for the SSRPM administration tools:
Microsoft.NET Framework Version 1.1 or higher.
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or higher.
Installation of Password Management – the steps below are only necessary when the SSRPM Administration Console is deployed.
1.
Download the installation pack for the Password Management
application from the website: Unzip the installation pack and copy the resulting folder SSRPM to the application server.

What’s New In Reset Password Management?
Reset Password Management has already been adopted by several companies. The basic idea behind Reset Password Management is to design the process and user experience of resetting passwords such that users are able to make a reset password request without calling a helpdesk.
Reset Password Management helps prevent the following problems:
General
■ Maintaining the login credentials of end-users whose passwords are forgotten.
■ Having to work with unreliable and impossible to find user login details.
■ Re-enrolling end-users whose password are forgotten.
System admin:
■ Reducing the volume of helpdesk calls.
■ Maintaining the number of end-users’ accounts with a valid password.
■ Reducing the number of support calls from end-users who forgot their password.
■ Reducing the time taken to resolve the password reset problem.
■ Avoiding to have to let a user’s password be resetted by a helpdesk.
User Experience:
■ Maintaining the user control over the process. For instance, “I do not want you to reset my password as long as I forget my password.”
■ Maintaining the end-users control over their password. “I would prefer that you first reset my password and then send me an email, not the other way around.”
Reset Password Management enables end-users to reset their own passwords, without helpdesk intervention. Reset Password Management is included in the following products:
