In the year 1917, the Empire of the German Kaiser dissolved its democratic government in a wave of nationalist fervor, and the people of Austria-Hungary consequently descended into civil war. The resistance movement, however, had its own weaknesses, including the lawlessness of its members. Owing to poor record-keeping, the movements’ leaders were unable to properly convey the positions and needs of their followers, and these ill-coordinated efforts cost the resistance dearly.
When German troops illegally invaded Austria-Hungary and occupied its city of Vienna, the leader of the resistance movement, Baron Friedrich von Seherr-Thoss, was deemed responsible. The Empire’s last lawful government in exile was forced to resign, and the Chief Magistrate of Vienna, Michael Zeppelin, was brought forward to rule in the name of the Kaiser as Count of Rosenkreuzstilette (Count of the Rose Cross).
The leader of the resistance, Baron Friedrich von Seherr-Thoss, was arrested and put to trial.
Fortunately, however, Baron von Seherr-Thoss’ trial was not held in a palace, but rather a prison known as the Penal Colony for Magicians. When a prison regime is dictatorial, you can always bet on abuse of power, and when magicians are the ones who are being persecuted, it is very likely that the ruling government will be unstable and highly suspect.
The rebellion of the magicians was swiftly crushed and their leader, Baron von Seherr-Thoss, was eventually sentenced to death. He was executed in front of a crowd of peasants who were growing increasingly angry over the punishment and whose support he had hoped to win over through his leniency. It was his death that would spark the beginning of the insurrection and the now infamous revolution.
That is the story of the Rose Cross, Rosenkreuzstilette.
