in an environment where the student union is the official computing center for the college, certain hardware items will be supplied to students for their use in the computing laboratories, classrooms, and laboratories. no general-purpose hardware other than that supplied by tcc is permitted. this includes the following:

locks are placed on computer terminals and equipment to protect against theft and to protect property. locks require keys, and tcc does not allow locks to be placed on computer keyboards, monitors, mice or other input devices. input devices are the property of their owners, and tcc should not be responsible for the prevention of theft or loss of any hardware item. it is assumed that each member of the college community will respect any lock or other security device that is placed on any computer that is not to be used by a member of the college community.
a salt is a string of binary characters to add to passwords, that are different from a fingerprint. in the example below, the salt contains the ascii character ‘2’ and the password ispassword. the salt must be added so that it makes the number of possibilities a lot higher than the number of available fingerprints. the keyboard only has 26 letters on it, but we already have 266 fingerprints. by addingthe salt to a password, we raise the possibilities to over 2256.
a hacker trying to crack passwords by brute force is also forced to deal with the fact that some passwords are more difficult to guess than others. different strategies have been developed to filter out passwords that appear too easy to guess, the most commonly used of which is the use of a dictionary. dictionaries are essentially tables containing the 100 most commonly used words in a language, or the thousand most common words in english. the reason for limiting the possibilities to these numbers is that, by the time the hacker gets to the 8,000th word from the dictionary, he has to make a choice whether to continue in the forward direction or to stop the process and switch to the next dictionary definition.
the possession of laptops, cell phones, and tablets in any form is strictly prohibited on the college campus, and their removal will be followed by disciplinary action. the use of these devices is not a guarantee that students will be able to function normally in a class. students who ignore this regulation and refuse to turn in or return their devices will be subject to disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion. if a student is found to have broken this rule, he or she will be subject to disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion. all devices must be returned when classes are dismissed. to do otherwise is a violation of this regulation. any student who has had his or her device confiscated may request that it be returned to him or her by completing a request for return of device form available from the it help desk.

the tcc community should support the principles of honesty, integrity, civility, and respect for others. the behaviors of college students are modeled by the college community, and the community is expected to uphold the standards of behavior. students should respect and obey the rules of the college and of the tcc community. they should abide by the tcc community code of conduct. students are not permitted to harass other students, faculty, or staff members or to disrupt college business. each student should maintain his or her own personal standards of behavior. students should not violate the rights of others.
