How to efficiently (and correctly) wrap long column values in a many-to-many table in SQL Server?

I have a Many-to-many table in SQL Server. It has two columns: ProductId and UserId. One of the columns is called ‘LongColumnName’. I want to join on the ‘ProductId’ and ‘LongColumnName’ columns.
(The ‘LongColumnName’ field is of type varchar(max) if that matters. The concatenation of the values in the ‘LongColumnName’ field is what makes the column long.)
I’m thinking something like the following, but I’m not sure if it’s correct:
select * from myTable as t
inner join myTable as w
on t.productid = w.userid
and t.LongColumnName = left(w.LongColumnName, len(t.LongColumnName) – 1)

Is this the right way to go?
