The Bantu Charter, adopted at the 1950 conference of the ANC, gave a call to the people of South Africa to demand their rights. One of the brightest students at the King William’s Town Native Affairs office, Biko was in full agreement with the aims and philosophy of the ANC. He was a political activist, joining ANC structures at a young age. He worked at the Native Affairs office, which was a strategic point for the ANC. Like many of the ANC activists, he joined Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in 1961. He became one of the MK leaders. He was imprisoned for nine months from February 1963 to November of the same year as a result of his involvement in the MK. During this time he started writing his poetry, which he continued to do in prison.

On 8 June 1976, thousands of students demonstrated in Soweto. One of the demands of the demonstrators was for the release of political prisoners, such as Steve Biko. The police reacted violently, entering the townships at 7am and brutally repressing the students, killing 156 and injuring several thousand. The next day, on June 9, 1976, in the town of Ngcobo, the same Bantu townships area where the Soweto uprising had taken place, a confrontation with the police erupted. The police opened fire on the demonstrators, and young Zulus retaliated. Some of those who fled to the nearby Umfolozi Game Reserve with the help of the ANC set up a base camp, but were subsequently expelled. The next day, in a house in Ngcobo, members of the ANC leadership, including Steve Biko, Bob Mphahlele and Aziz Gool.

steve biko died on 3 april 1977, aged 27, after being struck by a car in the braamfontein area of johannesburg. he left behind a wife and two children. his wife, bantu, became president of the anc women s league, and his son, nkosinathi, became a journalist, writer and politician, and after his fathers death, a leading opposition politician. bantu biko died in january 1999.
this was the context of the academic conference the promise of liberation in south africa, held in the winter of 1971. it was a highly stimulating event, with an active dialogue between political activists, academics, and students, all with a focus on south africa, which we drew into broader discussions of modernity, culture, and the post-colonial world. the conference was the first to establish contact between activists and academics, and was organised by the natal university students association (nusa), then based in durban, and the newly established centre for the study of post-colonial discourse, based at the university of natal in pietermaritzburg. the conference also gave nusa a new organisational focus, after the association of university teachers (aut) had blocked nusa from using its facilities for an academic conference, forcing the activists to form a new organisation, the south african students federation (sasf), with turner as its first president. richard turner was a colleague and good friend of steve biko and had helped to organise his collection of articles into a book for him; they were a fascinating pair. in the book biko described his philosophy as grounded in the dream of a united african society, in which whites and blacks would live together in a commonwealth of people. he presented the idea of african socialism as the only realistic alternative to apartheid. it was a philosophy based on a reading of marx, engels, and lenin, as well as sartre. it was a philosophy which, he believed, required the liberation of black consciousness, the forging of an african identity, and the creation of a society based on black-white unity. it was not a new philosophy, but rather a developed version of ideas which had been in circulation for a decade or more. it was taken up and developed by the black consciousness movement, especially its most influential thinkers and activists, who adopted it as their own and advocated it as an ideology of the anc, which they hoped would inspire the african masses to rise up in revolt against the apartheid regime.
