For example, due to trauma, aging, or diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, the sphincter muscles of some patients may close or otherwise malfunction. This may result in urine, fecal material, or other material entering the patient’s bladder.
Urinary incontinence may occur in both men and women. Urinary incontinence may include urine leakage through a patient’s urethra and/or bladder. There are two types of incontinence: overactive bladder (OAB) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Urinary incontinence may be caused by nerve injury or a nerve defect.
One known treatment for urinary incontinence is to implant an artificial sphincter, such as a pacemaker-driven artificial sphincter, in the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to act as a valve to prevent reflux of gastric acid into the esophagus. One existing sphincter that may be implanted in the LES is described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,458,638. Other known artificial sphincters include an inflatable cuff, which is placed around the LES and actuated to occlude the LES by inflating the cuff, for example, by a battery powered pump that injects fluid into the cuff through one or more fill ports. The inflatable cuff may be implanted to reduce or eliminate the effects of LES relaxations.
Other types of implanted devices have been proposed for controlling incontinence, including devices that monitor urinary incontinence and/or provide stimulation to the patient’s nerves to induce muscle contraction and/or to inhibit bladder muscle relaxation, which are referred to herein as “incontinence therapies.” These devices are often controlled by an external control module (ECM) that may be implanted within the patient’s body.
One type of known implantable device includes an inflatable cuff that is implanted around a sphincter, such as a LES, to prevent reflux of gastric acid into the esophagus. Examples of such implantable cuff devices may be found in U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,358,518, 5,431,619, 5,611,811,

Climate change mitigation and adaptation are crucial policy concerns in Europe, as discussed in the Kyoto Protocol and the European Union-wide Emissions Trading System. The European Commission is the primary political body setting national climate policies in the European Union (EU), and several climate action plans have been issued by the Commission since 2008. The main goal of these plans is to identify and prioritise policies for climate change mitigation and adaptation in a given sector. For this research, the EU’s climate action plans were identified and categorised as ‘climate policy’, ‘climate change mitigation’ or ‘adaptation’. Climate policies discussed in the plans include issues such as environmental quality, land use, clean air, reduction of green house gases and sustainable development. Climate change mitigation and adaptation policies covered in the plans include reducing greenhouse gases, mainstreaming adaptation, adaptation policy, expanding knowledge, incentivising renewable energy, and enhancing investment in research, development and innovation. Previous studies of climate policies in the EU have had issues in sustainability issues, and some have, thus, analysed the approaches taken by the Commission to the implementation of climate policies. This paper will add to the literature by systematically analysing the scope, structure and intended purpose of the climate plans. It will also go further in analysing the perspectives of climate policies that have been promoted through the plans. The findings in this study show that climate policies are not necessarily considered to be entirely in line with achieving sustainable development as well as with the EU’s policy framework. However, the research has identified three levels of climate policies through the EU climate action plans. The first level is the institutional level, where climate policies are intended to create a political
