Personal and small company computers are extensively used for business and personal purposes. Due to the large quantity of personal and small company computers in use, unauthorized access to these computers can be easily accomplished by one who can fool the owner into believing that someone else is accessing the computer. Once the computer owner is led to believe that he is in the presence of an unauthorized party, he is likely to use the computer to access non-authorized information without the appropriate permissions of the owner. Similarly, such unauthorized access can also be used to cause harm to the computer and its data. For example, a disgruntled employee may destroy a co-worker’s resume or compromise confidential business data by unauthorized access to the computer.
Such a problem can be solved by having a password which is limited to the owner of the computer. If the user desires to access the computer, he must enter the correct password. However, this arrangement can be abused by the owner. He may limit his password and share the password with his friends, thereby permitting unauthorized access to the computer without the inconvenience of entering the correct password.
An alternative arrangement is to write the password on the computer. However, this arrangement is not practical in that the owner must not only remember the password, but also remember where he wrote the password on the computer. If the owner uses the computer at home, or at work, he has a greater chance of forgetting the password.
Another arrangement is to have the owner sign on the computer using an electronic signature pad. This arrangement is subject to the same problems as the handwriting arrangement because the owner can use the password of another person to access the computer.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved security arrangement for a personal or small company computer which allows the owner to control access to the computer.
